![]() ![]() My youth pastor loves it, and I showed it to some church friends who also loved it. (Brian Mitchell Stokes sings his song-Through Heaven's Eyes- from which Moses learns that God has a purpose for him, even when he can't see it.) There are other great songs in this movie(it is also a musical)-ones like Deliver Us, Playing With The Big Boys, The Plagues, and When You Believe-which not only has a Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey rendition in the credits but also won the Oscar for Best Song! I don't know anyone personally who has seen it and hates it. Moses's wife Tzipporah is played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and her father Jethro is played by Danny Glover. (There is a missed opportunity there, but whatever.) Miriam and Aaron, Moses's biological siblings, are played by Sandra Bullock and Jeff Goldblum, respectively. The tall one is Martin Short and the short one is Steve Martin. The Pharaoh has 2 magician assistants, who call on false gods to perform magic. The cast includes Val Kilmer as Moses, Ralph Fiennes as Ramses the brother, Patrick Stewart stars as the original Pharaoh and Helen Mirren is his wife. The movie also has an impressive cast-many of whom are NOT religious. Even the opening suggests looking up the actual story in the Book of Exodus. ![]() ![]() There are liberties taken to make the story its own epic, such as Moses and the Pharaoh being his brother for further conflict. The movie simply tells the Biblical story of Moses, and how he freed his people from slavery. Now I adore it! As I have gotten older, I have seen it numerous times, and I own it on a double feature DVD with it's prequel-Joseph:King of Dreams, which I have reviewed on IMDB as well. I liked this movie as a kid, though- despite owning it- I rarely watched it. All in all, a superb animated film, which isn't to be missed. I tend to worry about A Listers in animated films, but this, people, is a truly talented voice cast, who are truly excellent when they are given a good script, which was exactly what they got. The voice talents are superlative, here we have Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Steve Martin and Martin Short voicing fairly complex and beautifully-drawn characters flawlessly. There is nothing wrong with the story at all, other that it is complicated, but it is a biblical story after all. "When You Believe" is a standout, as is the title song. The songs and music(by Hans Zimmer) are phenomenal. The animation is jaw-dropping, especially in The Plagues scene, which is still for me visually and musically one of the most haunting and evocative scenes in an animated film, and the part with the Red Sea splitting. I'm not exaggerating when I say this looks exactly like the DVD, all dirt and splotches in exactly the same spots, it is just a little sharper (which is better of course but still, I expect so much more this many years into Blu-ray for a decently big animated movie.I could not fault this movie whatsoever, and I am shocked at the low rating. I am actually kind of shocked they are releasing it in Blu-ray in this condition as titles that are much smaller get much better treatment and at least basic cleanup if not a full rescan. And as a red-head who has a step mother, I can officially state I received muuuuch more attention than this release has. I'm comparing the German release but I can't image the US release will have any different of an image given they are being released at essentially the same time. Then it's clearly a new transfer from the IP film source, but looks as they just treated it as a red-headed stepchild and did a quickie scan as is with no cleanup. If it's this one Universal Pictures Logo (2014) - YouTube Then it's likely an older HD master (that clearly isn't the same one used for the 1998 DVD and Itunes) created by Universal that's hasn't seen use until now, being they have Dreamwork's catalog back from Paramount and Fox. The easiest way to tell if it the BD is indeed a brand new transfer or not would be dependent on what Universal logo is attached to the front. The ITunes transfer on the other hand, being 1.78 and extremely dark in spots (most notably caps 4 & 5) is the original HD master that was created for the 1998 DVD and so on. The BD transfer looks like a newer scan of the same IP despite being 1.85 and having some small framing differences. ![]()
